Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning activity, the student will be better able to perceive the reality of the work of a biologist in a professional context, whether in the industrial or bio-medical environment, and thus to envisage the possibilities of a professional career at the end of his/her studies.

Goals

The objective of the course is to present a global vision of the work of a biologist in both the industrial and bio-medical environment through the visit of different laboratories and the meeting of different participants.

Content

The course will consist of several visits to laboratories where biologists carry out their work. For example, in previous years, a first visit took place at the SCK-CEN research centre (Mol), carrying out fundamental and applied research in the field of nuclear energy (impact of radiation on humans and the environment or radio-ecology). Several other visits (3 or 4) will then be carried out in the medical field (visit to a clinical biology laboratory), diagnostic and pharmaceutical field (visit to a biopharmaceutical company) or to a research centre involved in the life sciences. In addition to visiting laboratories, the focus will also be on discussing the biologist's career path with various alumni (in the form of a workshop).

Assessment method

Assessment is by personal written work and/or group work with oral presentation on the visits. Instructions are given at the first visit and are detailed on WebCampus.
