Learning outcomes

- To deepen the analysis of the architecture of the Modern Periods both stylistically and structurally - To understand the architecture of the Modern Periods as a production in close relation to sources and models - To learn to read and understand the architecture of the Modern Periods in its built or landscape environment - To be able to explain the architecture of the Modern Periods by situating emblematic buildings in their historical context

Content

The course considers the architectural production of the Modern Age in Europe and in the New World colonies through thematic modules. For example, the course given in 2009-2010 proposes, after an introduction (2h), a module on the ancient book of architecture (6h), on urbanism (6h), on the noble and princely residence (10h) and on architectural decoration (6h). This pedagogical approach allows for a variety of approaches to architecture and its decoration, and for the insertion of new modules from one year to the next, depending on the evolution of research and the complementarity of this course with other FUNDP courses. Within each module, the subject matter progresses according to a chronological framework. It pays particular attention to treaties, buildings, and major urban and landscape ensembles, without neglecting lesser-known achievements, when they help to nuance and refine the understanding of the phenomena analysed.

Assessment method

Oral examination, lasting about twenty minutes, during which the student is required to demonstrate his or her mastery of the subject by answering an open-ended question, favouring a transversal reading of the subject, and also by answering a few short questions, and then by submitting to an analysis of images during which he or she must identify the characteristics of the architecture observed and then use them to try to situate this architecture in its spatio-temporal context.
