Learning outcomes

Advanced machine learning concepts, in particular text classification, network and graph analysis
Introduction to data visualization, incl. for large datasets
Application of data analysis to cyber-security problems

Goals

The goal of the course is to deepen the understanding of machine learning mechanisms previously learned through their application to cyber security topics.
Special attention is given to large datasets
An introduction to data visualization is also included, as a support to the analysis process

Content

The course is organized around 3 topics in cyber-security which are analyzed through the 3 axes: cyber-security, data visualisation and data analysis and machine learning.

For each topic, the necessary theory is taught, and students work by pairs on the analysis of a dataset to draw conclusion about a potential or established security risk.

The three topics are:
  • spam/non spam classification
  • intrusion detection based on network traces
  • bot/no bot classification from various indicators, in particular linked to the network analysis

Assessment method

Course evaluation is performed based on submitted reports

If student fails, he is invited to revised the project that he did not pass, and re-submit a revised work.
