Learning outcomes

Reading Comprehension (B2+): The student can read with a high degree of autonomy, adapting their reading style and speed to different texts and objectives. They possess a broad and active reading vocabulary but may still struggle with less common expressions.

Listening Comprehension (B2+): The student understands spoken messages on various topics, whether familiar or unfamiliar, in personal, social, academic, and professional contexts. Major obstacles such as loud noise, complex speech, or idiomatic expressions are the only factors that limit their understanding. They grasp the main ideas of complex speeches, including technical subjects in their field, as long as these are relatively familiar and well-structured.

Speaking Production (B2): The student can deliver a detailed presentation on a range of topics related to their field of interest, developing and justifying their ideas with supporting points and relevant examples. They can also engage in clear and structured exchanges on familiar topics related to their field of study.

Goals

The main objective of this course is oral production with and without interaction. The target level is B2/B2+, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

By the end of this course, the student will be able to deliver a clear and methodical presentation on a topic related to their specialty. They will be able to highlight significant points and relevant elements, present their viewpoint, and logically connect arguments, as well as provide pertinent examples.

Content

The course offers various activities aimed at actively participating in a conversation or debate in a small group and delivering a brief oral presentation. Some activities also focus on improving the understanding of texts and audio-visual content related to the discipline.

Assessment method

1) Written Exam in January Session (40%)
  • Listening and/or reading comprehension exercises on material seen and/or unseen related to the topics covered in the first semester.
  • Questions on vocabulary and grammar covered in the course and worked on independently during the first semester.
2) Continuous Assessment During the Second Semester (30%)
  • Oral presentation on a defined technical subject (+ abstract).
3) Oral Exam in June Session (30%)
  • Discussion with the professor based on the topics covered in the course.
4) August/September Session

If the student’s overall average is below 10/20 in June, they are required to retake the parts they failed in the August/September session. Note that if any part of the evaluation below 10/20 in June is not retaken in August/September, the grade for that part will not be retained, and a 0 will be given for that part.

For both the June and August/September sessions, the student must have completed all parts of the evaluation and cannot have more than one failure in the various parts to pass the course. If the student has an average of 10/20 but with two failed parts, a symbolic grade of 9/20 will be given.

Note: Successful completion of this course does not lead to CEFR certification.
