According to the differences in German language proficiency, differentiated instruction is organized from the first year onwards:
* a beginner/elementary level for which no prerequisites are required
* an intermediate level for students who have at least two years of German language training
There is no diagnostic test at the beginning of the academic year. Students are divided into two groups by the teacher in charge based on their initial knowledge.
Each level includes a receptive component (listening and reading comprehension) and a productive component (written expression) in accordance with the descriptions in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Students
* gradually become familiar with the basic structures and grammar of German corresponding to the needs of a speaker from a communicative perspective, based on the themes, texts, and language behaviors covered in the course;
* gradually become familiar with a basic vocabulary sufficient to enable them to read simple texts and express themselves coherently in everyday situations
At the end of Block 1, students will have acquired at least
* level A1 (beginner group) according to the CEFR in terms of receptive skills (reading comprehension) and productive skills (written expression);
* level A1+ (advanced group) according to the CEFR in terms of receptive skills (reading comprehension) and productive skills (written expression).
basic grammar rules
* basic everyday vocabulary
* introduction to reading authentic and/or semi-authentic texts
* introduction to and practice in oral and written expression
* familiarisation with listening
Basic grammar - Basic vocabulary - Introduction to oral and written expression - Listening comprehension
The course takes place once a week throughout the academic year. It is taught in person and in small groups. As it is interactive, the course requires students to attend regularly and participate actively in the various educational activities offered by the teacher. Opportunities to practise oral and written communication are provided on a regular basis.
Continuous assessment is organised throughout the academic year in accordance with the procedures specified in the ‘Assessment method’ section.
The course is subject to continuous assessment and a final assessment. The final mark will be calculated according to the following weighting:
A) Continuous assessment (50%)
* Test 1: 30% (written test in December during the last class session of Q1)
* Test 2: 20% (written test in March/April)
B) Final assessment (50%)
* Written exam: 50% (exam during the last class session of Q2)
A written exam similar to the June session is organised in the second session (August/September) for students who obtained a mark lower than 10/20 in the first session. It accounts for 100% of the overall mark and covers all the material for the year.
Access to the June and second session exams is conditional on having participated in all course assessments.
