This insurance is compulsory if you wish to extend your stay in a Schengen area country.
This insurance may be required in two circumstances:
- You are already in Belgium and want to extend your stay.
- You are already in a Schengen country and want to come to Belgium.
If you are already in Belgium and would like to extend your stay
This insurance policy is required by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brussels to extend your scientific stay, which must also be supported by a grant. This insurance policy must cover you for a maximum amount of 30,000 euros and at least until the end of your stay. You must take out the policy in Namur, during your stay and before it is extended.
For example, imagine you arrive on January 1 for 3 months and are due to leave on March 31. Then, on March 10, you learn that your search in Namur can be extended by three months. You must then immediately take out insurance covering you from April 1 to June 30. You must then return to the Town Hall, with the documents listed on the "Declaration of arrival" page, to receive authorization to extend your stay.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs accepts the insurance policy from AXA. You must take out the policy in person. Ask for an appointment or subscribe online.

You are already in a Schengen country and wish to come to Belgium
This insurance can also be requested by a third-country national residing in an EU country who wishes to extend his or her visa for a stay in Belgium, when the validity of the initial visa expires before the date of departure from Belgium. If this is your case, you must take out this insurance in the country where you reside and send the copy of the contract to the Belgian embassy.
