Objective, content and prerequisites The main objective of this course is to improve your ability to read texts in English related to your academic orientation. After the course, you will be able to read non-specialised texts in these areas using a dictionary. The course consists of two modules: Module Objecti ve 1 Initiation 2 Reading of texts • The first module aims to reinforce your autonomy and prepare you to read texts in the target language. It is therefore initially a question of giving you or reviewing the grammatical and lexical bases, and of developing effective reading techniques (in particular anticipating the content of a text, deducing the meaning of new words and checking the quality of the data). • The second module focuses on the reading of non-specialised texts in English. The selection of texts will take into account the orientation of the students who have chosen this course. There are no prerequisites. You will be divided into three categories on the basis of a level test: • HIST and ART students who already have a very good knowledge of English will be admitted directly to the English 2 course, without going through the Introductory course. • Students who already have sufficient knowledge to take Module 2 will be exempted from Module 1. • The remaining students will follow Module 1 in the first semester with the aim of reaching the level required for Module 2.
Students who are exempt from module 1 : • First session: written examination in May/June on the subject of module 2. • In case of a second session: written examination in August on the subject of module 2. Students who are not exempted from module 1: • First session: written exam in January on the subject of module 1 (50% of the mark) + written exam in May/June on the subject of module 2 (50% of the mark). • In case of a second session: written examination in August on the module(s) for which the student has obtained a mark < 10 in January and/or June. Case 1: if < 10 in January and 10 in June, then examination on module 1, with module 2 mark carried forward. Case 2: if 10 in January and < 10 in June, then examination on module 2 with carry-over of module 1 mark. Case 3: if < 10 in January and < 10 in June, then exam on module 1 and 2.
Supports • Module 1: Michael McCarthy & Felicity O'Dell, English vocabulary in use (Cambridge University Press), available from Point Virgule. • Module 2: Collection of texts distributed via the WebCampus.
