Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Formalize and analyze the economic mechanisms underlying agents’ behaviour in the labour market.
Apply the main labour economics models to interpret real-world labour market phenomena.
Develop rigorous analytical reasoning based on microeconomic tools and methods.
Critically assess the relevance of economic theories in light of empirical evidence.
This course aims to:
Provide students with the analytical tools required to understand the behaviour of agents in the labour market, with a primary focus on a microeconomic approach.
Confront theoretical predictions with observed facts in order to assess their explanatory power and limitations.
Examine the functioning of labour markets and the implications of labour market institutions and policies.
Develop students’ ability to evaluate the effectiveness and potential consequences of employment policies.
The course covers the main topics in labour economics:
Labour supply decisions: workers’ participation and labour supply choices, and the factors influencing these decisions.
Labour demand: firms’ employment decisions and the determinants of labour demand.
Wage determination: the mechanisms of wage formation in competitive labour markets.
Alternative wage-setting mechanisms: selected theories and specific cases of wage determination.

Through these topics, students will gain a solid understanding of the fundamental mechanisms governing labour markets and develop the analytical skills required to examine contemporary labour market issues using economic reasoning.
The course combines ex cathedra lectures with the occasional use of short video modules. These supplementary resources are designed to deepen students’ understanding of key concepts and are reviewed and discussed during class sessions.
