        report on and discuss press articles in one-to-one interviews with a teacher;
        go and meet Dutch speakers in a town or city.

Goals

The EELVB 291 course aims to achieve level A2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in all skills, with the following main objectives:

    emphasis on written and oral skills based on real-life situations related to daily and student life: reporting, summarising written or oral information, describing a situation, expressing a simple opinion, etc.
    revision and extension of grammar (level A2+) as well as basic and thematic vocabulary related to the subjects covered in the course;
    application of grammar and vocabulary in the various skills, at the desired level: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, oral expression (with or without interaction);
    discovering Dutch-speaking culture through various challenges in a Flemish or Dutch town;
    developing autonomy in learning (in general, and learning Dutch in particular);
    developing certain cross-curricular skills: stress management, communication, deadline management, etc.

Content

Learning will take place through activities linked to daily and student life: reading texts, listening to videos/audio extracts, oral and writing exercises, discovery of Dutch-speaking culture. Students will also revise/learn grammar at the expected level, as well as basic and thematic vocabulary/useful expressions and language functions, depending on the context.

The course will also include the completion of various challenges in a Flemish or Dutch town, as well as a report on these challenges.

As part of the course, each student will meet with a teacher to assess oral proficiency:

- Q1 (individual): report based on current events

- Q2 (in groups of 2): dialogues/role plays

Most materials will be available on Webcampus.

Teaching methods

The course will be based, among other things, on the principle of the flipped classroom: students prepare materials (texts, videos) and exercises (oral, written) and during the course, the teacher provides additional insight into both language comprehension and oral and written techniques.

Classes will take place for two hours every fortnight. Students are placed in groups of no more than thirty.

Students will be asked to work in a group to discover the culture, after which a written report and presentation will be assessed.

Particular attention will be paid to the pleasure of learning, based in particular on fun activities offered to students on a voluntary basis.

Assessment method

Continuous work/regular learning is essential for success in this course.

It is mainly production skills that will be assessed during the course and at the end of the year: oral expression and written expression.

Receptive skills (reading, listening) will be practiced throughout the year through production activities.

Throughout the year, various tests will be organized to assess grammar and vocabulary mastery:

o Q1:

test 1 (online, strongly recommended but optional)

test 2 (in person)

o Q2:

test 3 (online, strongly recommended but optional)

test 4 (in person)

NB: Short tests (‘quick checks’) may also be held at the beginning of each lesson, based on the material to be studied each week (see ‘Leerkalender’).

Students will discover Dutch-speaking culture during a visit to a Flemish or Dutch city. They will be required to carry out various activities and report on them in a written document, which they will defend orally on the day of the exam.

In order to develop their autonomy in learning, students are advised to continue keeping a learning journal (‘Logbook’) in which they will describe their efforts and initiatives and report on their commitment to improving their Dutch language learning during the year (see Block 1 course).

The course can only be passed if all parts of the grade have been submitted.

Any part not submitted or any unjustified absence from part of the assessment will prevent us from calculating the student's grade and will result in a grade of 1/20 for the entire course.

However, for the August session, if the overall average for the course does not reach 10/20, each student will only retake the parts for which they did not obtain 10/20, with the exception of the continuous assessment, which cannot be retaken (deferral of grade). Students who arrive late in the year due to a change of course must retake the parts they were unable to attend in the second session.

Distribution of points, first session:

Continuous assessment (35%)

PLEASE NOTE: the continuous assessment mark cannot be retaken; whether passed or failed in June, it is simply carried over as it is to the second session.

Q1: Individual interview – Press articles (15%)

Q2: In pairs – Role-playing/dialogue (10%)

Written and oral assignments during the year, active participation* (10%)

Grammar and vocabulary tests (25%)

December: 10%

May: 15%

Exams (40%)

Written: Written assignment following the city tour (15%)

Oral: Preparatory file on the city ** = Condition for admission to the oral exam / penalties for deficiencies

June oral exam: final presentation of the file, in groups + discussion** (25%)

* The student's overall investment during the course will be assessed. For some tasks, the teacher will simply check whether they have been completed or not. In other cases, a more detailed assessment will be carried out. These assessments may involve both oral and written skills and will be assessed either individually, in pairs, or in groups.

** 1) If the file is incomplete or unsatisfactory overall: the student will not be allowed to take the oral exam. Penalties will be applied to the oral exam in the event of shortcomings (see assessment grid).

2) There will be zero tolerance regarding everyone's involvement in the group work for the city tour:

-   Failure to participate in your group's city tour will result in a zero grade for all of the work for the student concerned.

-   Lack of involvement in putting together the file will result in a zero grade for the student concerned.

Students who choose to receive additional support from Ms. Schoonbroodt will be awarded half a bonus point out of 20 if they have fulfilled their commitments, i.e., attending a meeting conscientiously prepared for each semester and keeping a regular logbook.
