An invaluable ally

Much more than a simple leisure activity, sport plays an essential role in the balance and fulfillment of students.

Maxime Scavée, permanent sports officer at UNamur explains " Sport plays an essential role in student life, both physically and mentally. It allows you to unwind after intense days of classes, better manage stress and improve concentration."

Sports practice also helps develop the skills of perseverance, performance and teamwork, while promoting moments of socialization. "Sport is an excellent way of maintaining a balanced lifestyle, which has a direct impact on well-being, but also on academic success", Maxime Scavée tells us.

These benefits make sport a valuable ally throughout the university career, which is why UNamur strongly encourages the practice of one or more sporting disciplines during studies. Maxime Scavée goes on to give some advice to students: "Our range of sporting activities allows everyone to try out different activities and discover new ones. We must take advantage of this". He also stresses the importance of integrating sports practice into one's weekly schedule to make it easier to stick to: "A regular practice, even in moderation, is beneficial in the long term".

Disciplines for everyone

"UNamur offers a wide range of sports activities tailored to the needs of students, whether they are looking for leisure or more intensive pursuits. Each year, this offer is re-evaluated to include new activities likely to appeal to as many students as possible. Students can also submit suggestions for new sports or partnerships. The friendly atmosphere also makes UNamur an ideal setting for reconciling studies and sporting activity", concludes Maxime Scavée.

From Monday to Friday, over twenty activities are organized on and around campus:

  • Dance and fitness: aerolatino, bodysculpt, body move, dance, detox, cheerleading, fitness, pomdance, physical preparation, running, stretching, tabata, yoga.
  • Martial arts - combat sports: aikido, cardio-boxing, fencing, recreational fencing, judo, inclusive self-defense and real combat, kyokushin karate, katori.
  • Individual sports: athletics, bouldering, roc-evasion climbing, freerun (parkour).

The University of Namur offers lots of activities. With the sports card - which costs just €40 - I have year-round access to all the sports on offer. It's great to be able to work out after class without spending a lot of money and without any commitment. It's also a great way to meet new people and relax.

Outside class, I'm part of the judo team led by Professor André Füzfa. The atmosphere there is great and this activity helps me find a balance between my studies and my personal life.

After school, I take part in the UNamur basketball team's training sessions. I enjoy these moments of togetherness and the festivities we organize as a team.

Competition and high-level sport [paragraph image + text]

Championships, matches, tournaments... Students who wish to represent UNamur alone or with a team can take part in ASEUS (Association Sportive de l'Enseignement Universitaire et Supérieur) competitions.

High-level sports students, through their university, personal or Wallonia-Brussels Federation-recognized sports activity, can benefit from an adjustment to their study program.

Robin, Warrant, a Bac1 political science student at UNamur and semi-professional cyclist, shares, "As a semi-professional cyclist, it's impossible for me to follow a 60-credit year, as I'm often on the move. I can only devote 2-3 hours a day to my studies. The University of Namur has allowed me to adapt my program to 45 credits, and this really saves me. Without this arrangement, I wouldn't be able to afford to study".

Between effort and soothing

It's not always necessary to do a cardio sport to relax. Through the gentle practices of yoga, stretching or sophrology, students release tension, soothe their minds and improve their flexibility and inner balance.

"Yoga and stretching allow you to disconnect from the outside world. You focus solely on yourself and the present moment. You rediscover your body and become aware of the sensations that flow through it. After the sessions, you feel calm and relaxed, everything you need to decompress and learn to better control stress", explains Colette Cornet, yoga and stretching teacher.

Alongside these sessions, UNamur's Cellule Médico-Psychologique offers weekly sophrology workshops. Practiced regularly, these breathing, meditation and visualization exercises provide relaxation and harmony. They promote better stress management, restful sleep and increased concentration.
