At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the main principles of toxicology of chemicals and the particular case of drugs. They will know the importance of toxicological studies in the pre-clinical development and notions of pharmacovigilance. They will be able to understand and analyse the safety of drugs in the context of benefit/risk assessment.
The course of toxicology and pharmacovigilance aims at understanding the relationships between the metabolism of chemical substances and drugs in particular with their potential toxicity. The essential notions of toxicology and pharmacovigilance will be described and illustrated through concrete case studies.
The first chapter of the course will be devoted to the general principles of chemical toxicology. Chapters 2 and 3 will focus on the toxicology of drugs in particular, in the different stages of the drug development process and in preclinical testing. Chapter 4 will address the special case of nanoscale formulations. The last chapter of this course will focus on post-marketing toxicology studies and the importance of pharmacovigilance through concrete cases.
Written examination in the form of short open-ended questions (SOQs) and/or MCQs. The exact modalities of the assessment are subject to change when the examination timetable is being drawn up, depending on practical constraints that the faculty administration may face, or in case of illness/force majeure/emergency with a placement, or because of the health situation related to the coronavirus.
