Learning outcomes

At the end of this module at level B1, the student will have extended his/her knowledge of the language around 5 skills: Listening: the student can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. He/she can understand the main points of many radio and television programmes on current affairs and topics of personal and professional interest when these are presented in a relatively slow and distinct manner. Reading comprehension: the student can understand texts written mainly in everyday or work-related language. He/she can understand descriptions of events, expressions of feelings and wishes in personal letters. Interactive Speaking: The student can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. He/she can take part without preparation in a conversation on familiar topics or topics of personal interest or everyday life (e.g. family, leisure, work, travel and current affairs). Continuous oral production: the student can express him/herself in a simple way to tell about experiences and events, dreams, hopes or goals. Can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions or plans. He/she can tell a story or the plot of a book or film and express his/her reactions. Written production: the student can write simple, coherent text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest. They can write personal letters describing their experiences and impressions.

· Study of the basics of Spanish grammar · Study of vocabulary and expressions relating to familiar areas (studies, hobbies and interests, work, restaurants, travel, etc.) and introduction to specialised vocabulary · Conversation, writing and comprehension exercises

Assessment method

The course will be assessed according to the following weighting: A) Continuous assessment (30%) In each term, a grammar/vocabulary test is given on the material of the units seen. B) Written exam (January session; 20%) In January, students will be assessed on the first term's material by means of a written exam, which covers the different skills worked on in class: listening and reading comprehension, and written expression. C) Final exam (June session; 50%) In June, students will have to take an oral and a written exam. 1) The oral exam (25%) will consist of (1) a conversation in pairs on topics covered in the different units of the Socios 1 textbook and (2) a conversation with the teacher on the portfolio produced during the course. The student who does not hand in a portfolio cannot present the oral exam. 2) The written exam (25%) will focus on vocabulary, grammar and the different skills worked on during the year. To validate the course, the student must have passed the different parts of the assessment (i.e. a mark of 10/20 or higher for each part of the assessment). If any of the marks are less than 10/20, the student will repeat the failed part(s) in the second session (August). For the August session, there will no longer be a distinction between the January and June subject. Regardless of the part to be retaken, the subject matter of the written examination will be that of the whole year. The course is given in the language taught and the use of French is limited. Only the grammar lessons will be given in both languages for a better integration of the nuances of each language. Due to rapid progress, only regular and active attendance will enable the student to achieve the course objectives. Therefore, absences are strongly discouraged.
