The Domaine d'Haugimont is a place of learning, experimentation and research for members of the Namur university community. It also contributes to training projects in several sectors (school public, continuing teacher training, agronomy, forest management, animal husbandry).
At UNamur
Several programs include field visits to Haugimont as part of course units:
- in veterinary medicine, at the educational farm located on the estate
- in biology and ecology ((forest visit, recognition of environmental indicator plants, recognition of twigs, census of fish populations as part of the "Saumon 2000" project)
- in history (environmental history)
- in geography
- in geology (geophysics course practical work)
- in economics (master of specialization in international and development economics - Population, Environment and Governance)
- in smart rurality
In the coming years, UNamur intends to strengthen the role of the Domaine d'Haugimont in cross-disciplinary student training in the field of ecological transition.
Landscape observatory
The landscape observatory was created in 2013. Managed by the Centre de Formation Continuée en Sciences et Mathématiques de l'UNamur (CeFoSciM), it is a unique research and teaching tool in French-speaking Belgium and represents a pilot scientific experiment in landscape analysis. It provides tools (educational panels, relief models, historical, topographical or giant maps, etc.) for describing, understanding and interpreting the landscapes of our regions and their evolution. Landscape mutations and their causes are thus deciphered, based on the "laboratory" territory represented by the commune of Faulx-les-Tombes, where the Domaine d'Haugimont is located. Since 2018, the observatory has forged a partnership with the GAL "Pays des Tiges et Chavées" to promote the exceptional quality of the landscapes in the communes of Assesse, Gesves and Ohey, the territory covered by this Local Action Group. Housed in two rooms of the gîte, the landscape observatory is aimed at a wide range of audiences: students from UNamur and higher education establishments, teachers on continuing education courses, school groups and the general public.
The landscape observatory organizes the Ateliers du Paysage as part of the University Certificate in Landscape Analysis. Find out more.
Other training courses
The Centre de Recherches Ovines plays a key role in training breeders in the sheep/goat sector in Wallonia. It also contributes to the training of Belgian and French agronomy students via internships, training courses and TFEs.
The forestry part of the estate constitutes a field of application for dissertations conducted within Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech and La Reid.
It is also a place for hammering training for agents of the Walloon Region's Department of Nature and Forests (DNF), thanks to the installation of a "marteloscope" by the non-profit organization Forêt Nature.
Visits and training for Walloon parliamentarians, as well as all Walloon higher education establishments and Walloon administrations linked to forest management (DNF, DEMNA, ...) are also planned from September 2024 as part of the PRW 108 project funded by the Office of the Minister for the Environment and entitled: "30 years of Pro Silva forestry in Haugimont (UNamur): ecological and economic assessment - Lessons and prospects for resilient forests in Wallonia". Visits are also given to humanities students from schools in the region.
