One example among many: contextual bilingual dictionary French - Sign Language

A bilingual dictionary French-Sign Language (LSFB), which can be queried in both languages, thanks to cutting-edge technology and access to a vast database. This is the fruit of four years' hard work by a team of linguistics and IT researchers at UNamur. A world first, it offers a high-performance, easy-to-use tool that is freely accessible to a wide audience: deaf children, their families, teachers, translators and interpreters.

Gender and diversity policy

UNamur has been combating gender discrimination since 2011 with the establishment of the gender group and then, in 2013, with the creation of a Vice-Rectorate responsible for developing this policy.

The rectoral team intends to affirm its determination to maintain voluntary and reasoned policies in this area.

Protection Harcèlement Etudiant de l'UNamur (PHARE)

The PHARE is part of an overall plan to combat moral, physical or sexual harassment and to fight aggression and violence against UNamur students and PhD students. It has three main strands: training, awareness-raising and remediation. PHARE's priority is to act effectively on the remediation component, offering optimal support for victims and witnesses.

The Medical-Psychological Center (CMP)

Inclusive teaching: the CMP organizes health promotion activities, aimed at students and in particular support for students with special needs. More info here...

The Special Needs Student Service (SNS) is aimed at current and future students at the University who are experiencing long-term difficulties that may prevent them from participating in teaching on an equal footing with other students (disabilities or disorders). This brochure mainly includes information on the inclusive higher education decree, students with special needs, the special needs student support service, the procedure from obtaining status to implementing reasonable accommodations, and avenues of appeal.

With regard to the values of plurality, respect, openness and personal fulfillment on which it is founded, as well as in compliance with the legal provisions contained in Belgian law, the University of Namur wishes to guarantee any transgender person the right to be recognized by the first name of their choice, which better corresponds to their gender identity and by which they wish to be called.

Forum Universitaire pour la Coopération Internationale au Développement (FUCID)

Migrations, inequalities, interculturality: An NGO within a university, the Forum Universitaire pour la Coopération Internationale au Développement (FUCID) aims to be a place for meeting, expression, debate, advocacy, awareness-raising and commitment, action, militancy and utopia. A network of men and women sharing the same values of solidarity and citizenship. It is rooted in UNamur's vision and in this framework, participates in the realization of the university's overall objective, namely to train responsible actors in society for a more just, sustainable, equitable world with respect for human rights. Intersectionality is a highly fashionable concept, yet one that is often misunderstood. As part of a Midi de la FUCID on October 27, 2022, Aïda Yancy, historian, activist and trainer, revisited the origins and meaning of the concept, as well as its relevance in a student and academic context. She illustrated her point by talking about the intersection of two forms of discrimination: racism and sexism. More info here...

The International Relations Department (SRI) offers mobility grants (in-out) notably via the ERASMUS+ and FAME programs to students, researchers and teachers.

Collaborations and partnerships

ILI project: migrants trained in French at UNamur

Since 2015, the University of Namur, in partnership with the Hénallux pedagogical department, has initiated several actions to help migrant people. They are part of a Local Integration Initiative (LII) project recognized by the Walloon Region. In addition to intercultural activities, a French language course is offered for levels B1, B2 and C1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). This year, around 15 students took part. Here's a look back at this enriching experience, in the service of a more inclusive society.
