Learning outcomes

The course is mainly devoted to sedimentary rocks, describing in detail the links between an environmental context and the type of deposits such as terrigenous detrital rocks, evaporites, carbonatesediments, carbonaceous rocks, . At the end of this course the student should be able to deduce, in broad terms, the They will learn about the context of the deposition of sedimentary rocks. They will become familiar with the description of sedimentary rocks from thin sections.

Goals

Teach the student to identify rocks from macroscopic observation (already seen in block 1) but especially from the thin section; once the rock is identified, the student must interpret his observations in order to define the environmental context of deposition.

Content

The course describes successively the different sedimentary rocks based on the environmental context of their setting. The 20 hours of theory are complemented by 30 hours of practical work, including 2 days of field trips. The student is introduced to the notion of microfacies from thin sections. Assessment method

The theory exam consists of two questions. The student has 40 minutes to prepare and 20 minutes to present; at the end of the exam, he/she has to quickly define 10 vocabulary words. The practical examination counts for 1/3 of the points and consists of the analysis of thin slides. Field trip reports are requested and graded.
