- Define rigorously each concept of the course. Give a geometric interpretation of each concept . Give specific examples.
- Given a specific problem, determine the data and the unknown variables and propose a mathematical model; solve the problem, interpret the results.
- Implement without hesitation techniques suitable for solving numerical problems related to subjects taught.
This course approaches mathematics as a discipline in the service of biological, geological, geographical and biomedical sciences.
It aims primarily to improve assimilation of the basic mathematical tool, indispensable to science experiments.
A second objective is to gradually bring the student to use their mathematical knowledge in a context of modeling. This course gives students the tools necessary to approach other scientific courses in their curriculum. We insist on the application of mathematical concepts in science. The approach of this course is based on the understanding of the concepts. We take the time to introduce each new concept carefully and to clearly explain why things work and how they work. No formal demonstration is presented. We stress on a precise justification of results and the distinction between a rigourous justification and a plausible argument. Applications will be proposed to allow the student to develop attack strategies against problems that can not be solved by a predetermined "recipe". The student will have to interact, to state his solution and to compare it with that of another student. The pedagogy used is therefore to give meaning to learnings so that they are transferable. We ensure that the assessment meets the objectives and methodology of teaching.
