In January 2023, Professor Romain Houssa of UNamur led a Belgian delegation to formulate a new ARES Institutional Support (IS) programme at the University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC) in Benin. This multidisciplinary research and innovation support programme aims to strengthen scientific collaboration between FWB researchers and Benin as well as other countries in the West African region, notably Togo, Niger and Burkina Faso.

A bilingual French-sign language dictionary (LSFB), which can be queried in both languages, thanks to cutting-edge technology (facial recognition) and access to a vast database compiling more than 4,500 signs, words and expressions.

Karel Mertens is a renowned researcher who has done outstanding work in the field of macroeconomics. He is staying in Belgium for three months to take part in the activities of the International Francqui Chair organized by the Department of Economics of the UNamur, in collaboration with KU Leuven, UAntwerp, Ghent University, UCLouvain, and the National Bank of Belgium. On 30 November 2022, Magaly Ghesquière and Laurence Meurant (UNamur), co-authors of the book "School and Deafness” (in French “Ecole et Surdité - Une expérience d'enseignement bilingue et inclusif", received the prize for the best book for Teaching and Continuing Education from the Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. This is another fine award that complements the recent release of the first bilingual sign language-French contextual dictionary searchable in sign language.

Angélique Aristondo, a C2W post-doctoral fellow at UNamur, has distinguished herself by winning the second 2023 Gender and Health Research Award from the ARES Women and Science Committee. Her research project focuses on violence against women in Senegal.

This June 28, 2024, the first twenty-two students of the Certificat interuniversitaire en Langue des Signes de Belgique Francophone (LSFB) et français, are proclaimed at UNamur. This is the first training course in French-speaking Belgium to be entirely designed in sign language for the deaf. It represents a significant step forward in inclusive education and the linguistic and social inclusion of deaf and hard-of-hearing people. It also highlights the strengths of deaf professionals in these fields.

It's a point of pride for UNamur: the Centre de Recherche en Économie du Développement (CRED) of the Institut DeFIPP at the University of Namur maintains close links between several of its researchers and James A. Robinson, recently awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics. Robinson, renowned for his groundbreaking work on institutions and economic development, has collaborated on several occasions with CRED members, strengthening academic exchanges and scientific advances in this field.

This is a great reward for the Interuniversity Certificate in Sign Language and French: it has just been distinguished by the European Innovative Teaching Award (EITA) in the "European Language Label" category.

Born on the internet, memes are an integral part of digital culture. These images, often humorous, combine text and visuals to convey a message. At UNamur, Lieven Vandelanotte, professor of English language and linguistics and general linguistics at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, has taken an interest in them from a linguistic point of view. In his new book, co-written with Barbara Dancygier of the University of British Columbia, he deciphers how these creations play with words, images, and grammar. 

It's official: the University of Namur joins the Réseau d'Échanges et de Liaisons entre Institutions d'Enseignement Supérieur Francophones (RELIEF). It thus becomes the fourth partner in this network, alongside the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR), the Université Savoie Mont Blanc and the Haute École Spécialisée de Suisse Occidentale (HES-SO).
