Biography

Jeroen Darquennes is full professor of German linguistics. His research focuses on language contact and conflict in European language minority settings. He is the author of numerous publications on aspects of language policy and planning in Europe, the lead editor of HSK45.1-Language Contact (2019, de Gruyter) with Joe Salmons (Madison, WI) and Wim Vandenbussche (Brussels) as co-editors, one of the general editors of Sociolinguistica (a series founded in 1987 and published by de Gruyter) and a member of the editorial board of international journals such as the Journal of Historical Sociolinguistics (de Gruyter), Language Problems and Language Planning (John Benjamins),  and Language, Culture & Curriculum (Routledge), of which he was associate editor between 2013 and 2016. He was head of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures between 2012 and 2015 and appointed commissioner of the 'German year' (année allemande) at the University of Namur in 2014. Between 2016 and 2021 he headed the Namur Institute of Language, Text and Intermediality (NaLTT, established in 2016). In 2017, he joined the team of the Vice-Rector in charge of internationalisation at UNamur. Together with the Vice-Rector he had the task of further developing and streamlining UNamur’s internationalisation policy. From 2021-2025 he served as Vice-rector of international and external affairs. Apart from (re)organising the international relations office in tandem with the director of the office, he helped to strengthen the position of the University of Namur in (inter)national networks, presided over interuniversity commissions on internationalisation (at the level of the CRef and the ARES), and took the lead in the process that enabled the University of Namur to join a European university alliance. He also served a president of the Board and the General Assembly of the FUCID, the NGO of the University of Namur. In 2021-2022 he was awarded a Francqui Chair in language contact and multilingualism at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
