Leerresultaten

- ability to find and describe symmetry elements of finite and periodic objects - ability to define and describe the concepts of point groups and space - ability to describe typical crystal structures, especially for ionic, metal and covalent crystals - master the theoretical principles underlying X-ray diffraction (powder and single crystal methods) - ability to analyse and interpret crystallographic data (diffractogram, crystallographic structure)

Doelstellingen

To understand the main concepts of (radio)crystallography (solid state physical chemistry, X-ray diffraction; powder and single crystal diffraction) in order to enable the learner to interpret and use crystallographic data.

Inhoud

The course is divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to the notions of molecular and crystalline symmetry, symmetry operators, networks and space groups. It continues with the study of the main types of crystalline structures: metals, alloys, salts, organic compounds, intermediate structures between the different types described above. The second part is devoted to (radio)crystallography and covers the following points: solid state physics and chemistry, X-ray diffraction, experimental methods for structure determination, X-ray diffraction on powders or single crystals.

Evaluatiemethode

Oral examination for the theoretical part and practical examination.
